My 16th bday..

February 11th, 2009

My sixteenth birthday was pretty awesome. Other then the fact that I was pregnant…

My Mom and Dad took Chris and I to the Mount Washington Hotel because I had always wanted to stay there. It’s a beautiful Historic Hotel up in the Mountains in New Hampshire. The place is HUGE. It looks like the hotel in The Shining.

The entire inside is beautiful. I couldn’t believe how fancy it was. All the hallways are even covered in a red rug like the Shining. There’s even a ballroom! We didn’t end up going to the ballroom or eating in the extra expensive restaurant though. They have really strict dress codes. We ate across the street at the Bretton Woods Restaurant. There were pictures on the walls of old Hotels as big– or almost as big as The Mount Washington Hotel. I guess there was one right across the street at one time. Where the restaurant is now. But the other grand Hotel’s didn’t make it through the Depression. This was The Mount Washington Hotel in the 40’s. The second picture may even be earlier.

There’s tons of things to do there. Everything from Fly Fishing and Horse Back Riding to golfing or clubbing. There’s an activity room downstairs too for teenagers and children. The adults bar is also downstairs. Chris and I went and played Pool while my parents hit up the bar. I want to go back and go to the bar now that I’m old enough. It’s really cool. They call it “The Cave”. I always wondered why it was so hard to find.. You’d think it would be upstairs by the dining room. But I guess it’s hidden because it was a “speak easy” during prohibition. There is an other bar upstairs that used to be a mens billards bar. There’s also an indoor swimming pool and outside tennis courts. At one time there was a bowling alley but it’s been changed to something else.

We did go Horseback riding. Riding a horse up a mountain was a lot less fun then I expected though.. Especially since I’m afraid of heights.

To be honest the rooms were not so great. We even had a sweet. It isn’t like a sweet you’d see in a new Hotel. It was just a regular room with a narrow hallway and children’s room attached. When I had originally tried to book the reservations online it said the Hotel was fully booked. See, The Hotel has certain hallways closed at certain times due to regenerations because it’s so old. When my Mom called they suddenly had a room available. When we got there we were the only ones on that hallway. Later we learned why..

Our room had asbestos! Not just in the walls but ripped OPEN over the pipes. Why would they put a pregnant girl in a room with open asbestos? Why would they rent a sweet with a children’s room that had open asbestos? Especially with the Thousand+ dollars it costs to stay there? My Dad was absolutely furious. He even took some of it and got it tested at his work. It was proven asbestos. We should have sued. Asbestos can cause all kinds of crap. Including Mesothelioma.

Overall I had fun though. It was a beautiful Hotel and probably a once in a lifetime experience.
